7 of protesting KUET students fall sick

KHULNA: At least seven students of civil engineering department of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) fell sick as they have been fasting unto-death demanding the resumption of academic activities.

The sick students are Imran, Jubayer, Akash,Shuvo, Rahul, Rizon and Nanik.

Among the sick Jubayer and Imran were pushed saline at University Medical Hall and others were given first aid.

A total of 119 students started the demonstration in front of administrative building and civil engineering department at around 10.00pm Tuesday.

Protesting students told banglanews, they are protesting to press home their demand to resume regular academic activities, which remained shutting from May 4.

Several months back, the authorities took punitive action against a third year female student of the department. Meanwhile, the High Court stayed the decision following a petition filed by her.

Following the court decision, on May 4, the department decided not to take classes and examination unless the punishment is executed.

Meanwhile, agitating students said they would continue fast unto death until their demands are met.

Earlier on Sunday and Tuesday, the students staged token hunger strike from 9:00am to 5:00pm in front of Administrative Building and civil engineering department demanding the resumption of classes and examinations.
