IUB Alumnus Navid Wins Global Recognition as UPG Sustainability Leader

Navid Bin Ahmed, alumnus of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), has been named a winner in the prestigious Global Campaign as a UPG Sustainability Leader, showcasing his artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

This recognition came after Navid’s active participation in the "Journey to Hurricane Campaign," which spanned from January 12 to February 5, 2024, culminating in an announcement made on February 9 from UPG’s headquarters in Geneva.

Navid's winning entry revolves around his innovative AI technology, ShiatsuOne, designed to support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – specifically SDGs 3, 9, and 17. This novel innovation aims to remotely detect diseases like COVID-19, Pneumonia, and Bronchitis, reflecting a significant advancement in medical technology and global health.

The "Journey to Hurricane Campaign" is part of a broader initiative by United People Global (UPG) to promote sustainability leadership worldwide. The campaign highlights the contributions of UPG Sustainability Leaders like Navid, who have been rigorously trained and certified by UPG to champion sustainable development across the globe. Navid's campaign, which covered extensive ground from the farthest east to the farthest west of the world, included both physical and online engagements with various organizations and institutions. This widespread outreach underscored the global appeal and impact of his work.

Navid, who received BSc and MSc degrees in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from IUB, represented Bangladesh in the campaign, competing from the South Asia region against the nominated leaders from Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, and Pakistan. He secured the winning crown by receiving the highest number of votes from around the world. Deelipa Shree Adhikari from Nepal won in the female category. A total of 13 leaders out of 36 from all 7 world regions have won in this global campaign.

Navid is also the recipient of the Technovation Prize and Beautiful Life Championship awards at the SDG Open Hack! Bangkok in 2022. Furthermore, the AD Scientific Index ranked him among Asia’s top 77% of scientists for the consecutive years 2023 and 2024. His current rank, as of now, is 320,071 out of 437,420 (within the top 73.17%).

Upon winning, UPG President Yemi Babington-Ashaye commended Navid for his long-standing engagement and enthusiasm within the UPG community, expressing eagerness to welcome him to the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership in Maine, USA, for a week-long immersive training.

Navid's reaction to his win was one of profound gratitude and surprise, emphasizing the importance of AI and innovation in impacting lives positively. He stressed the significance of his campaign in raising awareness and encouraging future professionals to pursue their passions, underscoring the values of simplicity, dedication, and honesty.

UPG is a community committed to making the world a better place by encouraging and enabling individuals to contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Through publications, projects, and events, UPG fosters collaboration, raises awareness, and strengthens the global movement towards sustainability.
