 5 JU students suspended over mugging

JU: The Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities Monday (April 1) suspended five students on charge of beating and mugging a person on the campus.

The suspended persons are - Md Al Raji, student of Government and Politics (45th batch), Sanjoy Ghosh, student of Drama and Dramatics department (44th batch) and Raihan Patwary, student of Geological Science department (45th batch), Shah Mostaque Soikat, student of Computer Science and Engineering (45th batch) and Mokarrom Shiblu, student of Philosophy (45th batch).

JU disciplinary committee, in a meeting at office of the Proctor of the university on Sunday (March 30), took the decision. 

Contacted, JU Proctor of the university A S M Firoj Ul Hasan said, “We held disciplinary board meeting following written compliant from the victim. We formed a four-member probe committee to investigate the allegation. The committee has been asked to submit its report within seven working days.”

Five suspended students cannot participate in any class or examination. At the same time, the decision has been taken to inform the matter to their guardians, he added. 

According to allegation, the victim was identified as – Monir Sarer, an outsider of JU, was heading towards Dhaka via Bishmile area early on March 30. Some JU students intercepted him and took him to botanical garden area on the campus. 

The students tried to tag him as yaba trader and beat up. They snatched his mobile and money bag and demanded taka one lakh as ransom”, he said.  

Being informed, some JU officials along with his in-law’s family members rushed in and rescued Monir Sarder and taken him to hospital.

Three students were caught and two others managed to flee the scene. Later, the detainees were handed over to university authorities.
