Coronavirus may last 2-3 years: DGHS DG

DHAKA: The coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic might take at least two to three more years to go away, although the rate of infection goes down, said Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Prof Dr Abul Kalam Azad.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), the Covid-19 situation will last at least two to three more years, the DGHS chief said at the daily COVID-19 health bulletin broadcast from Mohakhali in the capital.

“The government is working to balance the life and livelihood...People should help the government tackle the coronavirus outbreak by following the health guidelines,” he said.

As Bangladesh is a densely-populated country and the coronavirus is highly contagious, the coronavirus infection can be difficult to contain if people move carelessly and do not follow hygiene rules,” Dr Azad said.

Dr Azad said he himself recovered from the COVID-19 disease this week after undergoing treatment in hospital and following health regulations.

Bangladesh on Thursday (June 18) reported 38 more deaths from coronavirus (Covid-19) infection in the last 24 hours, raising the death toll to 1,343, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Besides, 3,803 people tested positive for coronavirus in the last 24 hours raising the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 1,02,292.

As 975 patients recovered in last 24 hours, the number of total recovery reached 39,164.
