Bashundhara Eye Hospital observes World Glaucoma Week 2022

Bashundhara Eye Hospital and Research Institute (BEHRI), a hospital of the country’s largest business conglomerate Bashundhara Group, has started observing World Glaucoma Week 2022 in a befitting manner.

The doctors and staff of the hospital held a rally and discussion programme at the hospital premises at Bashundhara Residential Area in Baridhara of the capital Monday morning.

Highlighting theme of this year's glaucoma week "The World is bright, save your sight", they paraded through various streets of the residential area with banner and festoons to make people aware of glaucoma.

Aristovision Ltd, a pharmaceutical company dedicated to the production of eye medicines, sponsored the programme as part of its corporate social responsibility.

BEHRI Director Prof Dr Md Saleh Uddin, Prof Dr SM Monowarul Islam, Prof Dr Moutushi Islam, Dr Rubina Akther, Dr Tasruba Shahnaz, Dr Majumder Golam Nabi, Dr Md Ripon Ali, hospital manager Md Ahsan Habib and other staffs were present at the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dr Md Saleh Uddin, a renowned eye specialist and director of BEHRI, said 90-95 percent people are not aware of glaucoma which can cause blindness.

About the disease, he said glaucoma diseases are primarily associated with congenital problem of newborns, high blood pressure of people aged 35 and above and old age complications of elderly people.

"The people aged 35 years and above may suffer from glaucoma due to hypertension & high blood pressure. So, people should avoid tension as high blood pressure can cause high eye pressure affecting eye drainage system,” he said, calling upon people to avoid tension.

He said cataract is responsible for 80 percent blindness, diabetic 4 percent, old age factors 2-3 percent and glaucoma 1.5 percent.

The Bashundhara Eye Hospital and Research Institute also arranged glaucoma screening for free for detection of the disease of the people at the earliest.

It may be mentioned that Bashundhara Eye Hospital and Research Institute observes World Glaucoma Week every year to boost public awareness. It also provides poor and helpless people from across the country with free cataract surgery, other eye treatment and medicines.
