A Russian “massive attack” on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv has killed at least four people and left 27 others wounded, Ukrainian officials said.
Residential areas of Kyiv were among several sites struck overnight as waves of drones targeted multiple regions, including Zaporizhzhia, where local authorities reported 16 people injured, three of them children.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister said hundreds of drones and missiles had been deployed in the latest assault. Moscow has not issued a response.
On Saturday, President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russia’s aggression would not end with Ukraine, arguing that Moscow was testing European air defences with recent incursions into NATO airspace.
“Putin will not wait to finish his war in Ukraine. He will open up some other direction. Nobody knows where. He wants that,” Zelensky said, just hours before the barrage began.
The war, launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin in February 2022, has continued despite international mediation efforts led by US President Donald Trump.
In neighbouring Poland, fighter jets were scrambled early on Sunday as Russian strikes hit western Ukraine. The Polish military described the action as preventative, noting that such responses have become routine since NATO aircraft shot down three Russian drones over Poland on 10 September.
Moscow has denied involvement in drone incursions over Danish airports. Copenhagen has said the flights appeared to be carried out by a “professional actor” but stopped short of identifying who was responsible. Estonia, meanwhile, accused Russia of violating its airspace with warplanes.
NATO has since moved to reinforce its eastern flank. Trump, who recently shifted his stance on the war, suggested NATO nations should shoot down Russian aircraft entering their airspace. Last week, he also stated for the first time that Ukraine could reclaim all of its territory from Moscow.
Addressing the UN General Assembly on Saturday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov insisted Moscow had no plans to attack EU or NATO members but warned of a “decisive response” to any aggression directed against Russia.
