DHAKA: A South Yorkshire charity set up to support poor children in Bangladesh with the building of a new orphanage is being backed in its efforts by a healthcare firm.

The Bangladesh Orphan Appeal has been launched by Dinnington businessman Tapan Mitra, with the aim of setting up a home and school for 60 children.

Now Precedo, a staffing agency for health workers, has provided funding for the appeal to become an official registered charity.

Mr Mitra said: “The land has been acquired and we are now ready to start the process of fundraising to build the orphanage. Once built, the project will be self-sustaining with the help of a water-bottling plant.

“Our aim is to provide a loving home, with a western educational system and a medical centre for the orphanage and the surrounding community.

“Precedo has made my dream come true. The generosity of the company now means we can register the charity and start the fundraising.”

Mike Webster, chief executive of the Leeds-based agency, said: “This initiative is part of an overall strategy for the company and we take our social responsibility very seriously.

“The idea of saving young children’s lives is simply amazing.”

All funds raised through the appeal go directly towards building the orphanage – the charity has no paid staff and supporters are not paid for their time.

Anybody who donates £10 or more will get a free T-shirt.
