Salim Prodhan jailed for 8 years for corruption 

A Dhaka court today (April 30) sentenced casino "kingpin" Salim Prodhan to eight years of imprisonment for amassing illegal wealth and money laundering.

Judge Md Badrul Alam Bhuiyan of Dhaka's Special Judge's Court-8 handed down the verdict in presence of the convict at the court.

Besides, Salim Prodhan was fined Tk 11 lakh, in default, he will have to serve seven months more in jail.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested him from a Bangkok-bound flight at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on September 30, 2019.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against him on October 27 of that year as according to the commission, Salim amassed movable and immovable wealth worth Tk 57.79 crore beyond his known sources of income.

Of them, the commission found illegal moveable wealth worth Tk 57.31 crore and immovable wealth worth Tk 47.46 lakh during the probe.

Salim also committed offences under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act 2012 by laundering Tk 21.99 crore to Thailand and USA, according to the charge sheet.

Three more cases were also filed against him and those are now pending with different courts in Dhaka.
