The Supreme Court (SC) today directed Golam Kibria Boro Moni, an Awami League leader, and his wife Nigar Aftab to surrender before the Tangail court in two weeks in a rape case.
It also stayed a High Court order that granted them anticipatory bail in the case.
Justice M Enayetur Rahim, chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the SC passed the orders following a petition filed challenging the HC order of the anticipatory bail.
Senior lawyers Yusuf Hossain Humayun and lawyer Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi moved for Golam Kibria, elder brother of Tangail-2 AL lawmaker Tanvir Hasan Soto Monir, and his wife during the hearing today.
Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain Bappi confirmed the matter.
According to the case statement, Golam Kibria, who is vice-president of Tangail town AL unit and secretary general of the district's Bus-Minibus Owners' Association, was sued over the rape and torture of a teenager. Now the 17-year-old victim is pregnant.
Nigar Aftab was also accused of torturing the girl, according to the case filed with Tangail Sadar Police Station on April 6.
