Wild elephant ‘electrocuted’ in Sherpur

The forest officials and police on Saturday (May 6) morning recovered the body of a wild elephant from Bakakura area of Garo Hills in Sherpur's Jhenaigati upazila.

According to the locals, several herds of elephants from Garo hill along the border had been damaging crops and vegetables at Kangsha union of the upazila for the past couple of weeks. To prevent damage of crops, farmers set electric wires surrounding the croplands.

Monirul Alam Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Jhenaigati Police Station confirmed the matter.

Md Rabiul Islam, Balijuri range officer of the Forest Department, it seemed that the elephant died from electrocution and people who were involved with it will bring under law. 

The official seized some electric and GI wires from the area.
