A man was burnt to death after a shattering fire broke out at a market at Bakerganj Upazila in Barishal on Monday (May 8).

The deceased Sagar Chandra Pal, 28, was a shopkeeper of a grocery shop at the market, and a resident of Dhalmara village under Neyamati union of the upazila.

The incident originated at Natun Bazar under Neymati union of the upazila around 3 am.

However, seven shops were gutted in the fire.

Bakerganj Fire Service station officer Abdul Quddus confirmed the matter.

He said a fire broke out due to a short circuit. Then the fire soon spread to the adjacent shops. Being informed, two Fire Service units went to the spot and started to douse the blaze.

The official also said that there had been an estimated loss of Tk 23 lakh in the incident.
