SC suspends Rana plaza owner's bail till July 10

The Supreme Court (SC) suspended the bail granted by the High Court to Sohel Rana, owner of the Rana Plaza until July 10 in a murder case filed in connection with the death of 1,138 garment workers after the building collapsed in 2013.

The appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Hasan Faiz Siddiqui passed the order on Monday (May 8).

Advocate Kamrul Islam attended the hearing on behalf of the accused.

Previously, the High Court had granted bail to Sohel Rana on April 6. As a result, there was no obstacle to his release on bail, as lawyers had indicated.

Later, the state filed an application seeking suspension of the bail granted to Sohel Rana by the High Court.

In response to the state's petition against the High Court order, the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division suspended Rana's bail on April 9. At the same time fixed a date of hearing in the regular bench of Appellate Division.

On April 24, 2013, over 1,100 RMG workers were killed when the 10-storey Rana Plaza building adjacent to the Savar bus stand collapsed. Thousands of other workers were injured.
