Cyclone Mocha: Risk to Bangladesh reduced

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said the risk of severe Cyclone Mocha has decreased for Bangladesh as the severe cyclonic storm is heading towards Myanmar

Azizur Rahman, Director of the Meteorological Department made the remark to reporters on Sunday (May 14) at noon.

He said: "The very severe Cyclone Mokha is passing through 50-60 km south of Teknaf in Cox's Bazar, therefore the risk we had has come down."

He said that the storm will come to the coast through Myanmar's Situi region. As a result, the risk that existed in Cox's Bazar, Teknaf area has reduced a lot.

Cyclone Mokha will have a maximum speed of 120 to 130 km while crossing the centre. So even if the risk is reduced, it will have an impact on St Martin, said the Azizur.

"We are expecting a high tide of 8 to 12 feet. This may cause temporary flooding in Teknaf, Saint Martin", he added.
