A total of 36 people, including 31 students from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) were arrested while visiting the Tanguar Haor in Tahirpur upazila, Sunamganj district.
The reason behind the detention remains unclear, as the police did not provide any specific charges against them. No legal action has been taken yet.
Rajon Kumar Das, the additional superintendent of Sunamganj Police, said that the 36 persons were detained due to "suspicious movement," but further investigations are ongoing to ascertain the details.
According to locals, the BUET students embarked on their tour early Sunday morning via boat to explore Tanguar Haor. Later in the day, when they reached Natun Bazar on the Patlai River, a team of police on two speed boats intercepted them while they were heading towards the Tekerhat tourist spot. The students and the two boatmen, Ahadul Mia and Muhaddis Mia, were taken into custody and transported to Tahirpur Police Station.
Shahinur Ralukdar, president of the Tahirpur Boat Owners Association, told Banglanews that the police informed them about the detention based on information received from Dhaka.
