EC formally seeks army deployment

DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC) sent a formal letter to the Armed Forces Division seeking assistance to administration for the upcoming 10th National parliamentary elections.  

A letter, signed by EC joint secretary Jesmin Tuli, was sent to the office of Principal Staff Officer Lieutenant General Abu Belal Mohammad Shafiul on Sunday.

According to the letter, the army will remain deployed for 15 days from December 26.

On December 20, after a meeting with law enforcing agencies, the Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed announced the deployment of army for assisting the civil authorities from December 26 to January 9 in maintaining countrywide law-and-order situation ahead of the 10th general polls.
