Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive arrested a man along with 40 gold bars at Maheshpur upazila in Jhenidah district on Wednesday (January 17) morning.
The arrested is Rimon Hossain, a resident of Matila Baganpara area under the upazila.
BGB-58, Maheshpur Camp Company Commander Masud Parvej confirmed the matter.
He said acting on a tip-off, the border force came to know that a huge assignment to gold would be smuggled the border area. Being informed, a team of the force conducted a raid Jululi Matila Baganpara area.
After sensing the presence of the force, Rimon and his another cohort tried to escape from the scene but the BGB personnel managed to arrest Rimon, however, the another one fled the scene, he said.
At that time, they recovered 40 gold bars, weighing 4.665 kilograms.
The estimated market value of the seized golds is Tk 4.7 crore, he said.
A case was filed with Moheshpur Police Station in this regard against them and legal action would be taken in this regard, added the BGB official.
