Prof Humayun Azad murder: Death row convict arrested

A leader of the banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and also a death row convict in Dhaka University Professor Dr Humayun Azad murder case was arrested 20 years after the verdict.

The accused is Nur Mohammad (40) alias Sabu alias Shamim alias Mahbubur Rahman, leader of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), son of Abdul Goni, a resident of village Jharabarsha (Collegepara), Saghata, Gaibandha.

Nur Muhammad took part in the killing of Prof Humayun Azad in 2004 at the behest of JMB's Amir Sheikh Abdur Rahman in association with JMB's military wing chief Ataur Rahman Sunny, Salauddin Salehin, Hafez Shahid, and others, as Humayun Azad's book "Pak Sir Zamin Saad Baad" was against the JMB ideology.

On 27 February 2004, at around 9:30pm, Dr. Azad came out of the 'Amar Ekushey Book Fair' and reached between Bangla Academy and TSC. He was surrounded by the arrested accused and his accomplices. The evildoers took out the machete-knife from the bag and indiscriminately hit Humayun Azad’s various parts of the body, including the neck, head, face, throat, and hands. At that time, they exploded a hand bomb exploded, and ran away. Later, severly injured Dr. Azad was taken in Germany for treatmernt but died there.

A case over an attempt to murder was filed with Ramna Police Station the next day of the incident.
