Members of the ruling Awami League (AL) attacked the Shailkupa Police Station in Jhenidah on Sunday afternoon to free a fellow activist from custody, leaving at least 30 including 6 police members injured.
Police said they arrested accused criminal Mostak Sikder from the Dhawra village of Dhalhara Chandra union, about an hour or two before coming under attack, for engaging in factional clashes to expand territorial control on Saturday.
Agitated by Mostak’s arrest, his supporters in Awami League surrounded the police station at 3pm and started hurling brick chips at the officers inside. Some police members immediately suffered critical injuries, and had to fire blank shots to disperse the attackers.
Additional Superintendent of Police Mohidur Rahman confirmed that 6-7 of his colleagues have suffered injuries.
