Army deployed in Sylhet flood-affected areas

Army troops were deployed on Tuesday to protect the flood-affected Boroikandi power substation in Sylhet, where around 700,000 people are still stranded amid continuous rain.

General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed, the Chief of Army Staff, deployed the troops at the request of the Sylhet City Corporation.

The electricity supply has been suspended in Sylhet city’s adjoining areas, including Railway Station, Boroikandi, Kamalbazar, Masukganj, Bisik, Lalabazar, Shibbari and Kadamtali central bus terminal as the Boroikandi power substation badly damaged due to the rain water.

The army members are working tirelessly to resume the power supply in the area.

Continuous heavy rainfall over the past three days has worsened the flood situation in Sylhet for the second time in just 20 days.

Nearly 700,000 people in the Sylhet metropolitan area and throughout the district are now stranded.

In the metropolitan area alone, 50,000 people across 21 wards have been affected by flooding, according to Sylhet district administration sources.
