Nation set to celebrate 54th Victory Day tomorrow

The nation is set to celebrate the 54th Victory Day of Bangladesh on Saturday (December 16) with due solemnity and rich tributes paid to the martyrs of the Liberation War of 1971.

On December 16 in 1971, Bangladesh was born as an independent country under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the cost of supreme sacrifice of three million people and the honour of nearly half a million women.

The programmes marking the 'Victory Day' will include a 31-gun salute, placing of wreaths at the monuments to pay homage to martyrs, hoisting of the national flags atop all government, semi-government and private offices as well as offices of autonomous bodies across the country.

The victory day programmes also include decorating city streets and illumination of important buildings and establishments, roads and street islands at night.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus will lay wreaths at the National Memorial in Savar. Following that, under the leadership of the ministry's adviser, families of the country's highest war heroes, wounded freedom fighters, and other distinguished freedom fighters will also pay their tributes.

Foreign diplomats based in Bangladesh, along with political and social organisations, as well as the general public, will also lay wreaths in honour of the martyrs.

Besides, the President and the Chief Adviser will deliver messages on the occasion, and special supplements highlighting the significance of the day will be published in newspapers.

On this occasion, various social and cultural organisations, including the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Bangla Academy, National Museum, Liberation War Museum, and Bangladesh Children's Academy, will organize discussions, cultural programmes, drawing competitions, essay writing contests, sports events, and screenings of Liberation War-related documentaries.
