US national security adviser reaffirms support in call with CA Yunus

United States (US) National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan talked to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus over the phone reaffirming his country's commitment to supporting the democratic process in Bangladesh.

The call, which took place on Monday evening, centered on matters of mutual interest, according to a statement from the chief adviser’s press office today (Dec 24).

During the conversation, Sullivan praised Professor Yunus's leadership since assuming the role of Chief Adviser of the Interim Government on August 8.

He commended the significant progress made under Yunus’s leadership over the past four and a half months, including strides in revitalizing the economy and implementing critical political, electoral, and other reforms.

Sullivan also expressed his appreciation for the announcement of potential election dates, reaffirming the United States' ongoing support for Bangladesh’s democratic process.

During the phone call, they also discussed the overall development situation in the country.

Prof Yunus thanked the US for its generous support to Bangladesh in overcoming the inherited problems.

Sullivan reconfirmed US support for the Professor Yunus-led interim government and for a prosperous, stable, and democratic Bangladesh.

The chief adviser thanked the US for its vital support in this challenging period for Bangladesh.

He recalled his meeting with President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken during his tour to New York in September.

Prof Yunus said he is expecting reports of six major reform commissions within January.

After that, the consensus-building process will begin to prepare the nation for reforms and elections, he said.
