Police verification may no longer be required for passport issuance and renewal, as national identity (NID) cards and birth certificates will serve as the primary basis for passports.
During a meeting on Tuesday (February 4) at the Secretariat, chaired by Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry Dr. Nasimul Gani, most representatives supported removing police verification from the passport process.
According to Home Ministry sources, since NID cards and birth certificates are considered the key documents for passport issuance, there should be no need for additional verification if these documents are correct.
Based on this view, the Security Services Division of the Home Ministry has started working on the matter.
An official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said discussions on the issue have progressed significantly, and another meeting will be held soon. Most representatives in the meeting favored removing police verification.
The meeting also recommended steps to resolve passport-related complications.
A final decision will be made based on the recommendations of the advisory council, after which an official order will be issued.
Representatives from the Chief Adviser’s Office, the Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry, the Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry, the Special Branch of Police, and other relevant departments attended the meeting.
