Two killed in Chattogram house fire

A fire in the Bhuluar Dighir Par area of Chattogram’s port city claimed two lives and left three others with burn injuries, said the Fire Service on Monday morning (Feb 10).

According to hospital sources, husband and wife Md. Ilias (50) and Parveen Akhter (45) died of suffocation due to smoke inhalation.

Besides, Md. Faisal (19), Md. Sohan (19) and Shahina Akhter (23) have been admitted to the Burn and Plastic Surgery Department of Chittagong Medical College (CMC) Hospital.

Fire Service Assistant Director Abdul Malek said that four units of the fire service went to work after receiving the news of the fire at 6:42 am.

He said: "The fire was brought under control around 8 am. Five mud houses in the colony were burnt down in the fire caused by a short circuit. Five people were rescued from the scene and sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared two of them dead."

The remaining three are currently receiving treatment at the hospital’s Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit, according to the official.

Preliminary findings suggest that the deceased may have succumbed to smoke inhalation, while an electrical short circuit is suspected to have triggered the fire. The blaze was fully contained by 7:15 am.

The fire gutted several rooms across five houses in the colony, causing damage worth Tk 15 lakh, he added.
