CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers in Dhaka lifted their road blockades on Sunday after the government reversed its decision to enforce a metre-based fare system, which had proposed fines or jail terms for non-compliance.
The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) issued a cancellation notification on Sunday morning, signed by Shitangshu Sekhar Biswas, the director (engineering).
On February 10, the BRTA sent a letter to the DMP, instructing the police to take action against CNG-run four-stroke three-wheeler drivers who charge fares higher than the amounts shown on their metres.
The letter required all such vehicles to have metres installed.
Drivers found violating the rule could face up to six months in prison, a fine of up to Tk 50,000, or both penalties, it added.
Drivers had blocked roads in areas including Rampura, Badda, Jatrabari, Mohammadpur, and Gabtoli, causing significant traffic disruptions.
The protests ended after the government withdrew the controversial decision, allowing traffic to resume.
