Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus paid tribute to the martyrs of the historic Language Movement on the occasion of Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day.
He placed a wreath at the Central Shaheed Minar in the city at 12:12am on Friday. Arriving at the premises as the clock struck midnight, he moved towards the altar at a slow pace while the iconic song "Amar Bhaiyer Rokte Rangano Ekushey February . . . Ami Ki Bhulitey Pari?" played in the background.
Prof Yunus stood in silence for a moment, honoring the memory of the language martyrs. Advisers to the interim government, chiefs of the three services, freedom fighters, diplomats, and senior civil and military officials were also present.
Following the official tribute, the Shaheed Minar was opened to the public. People from all walks of life walked barefoot, carrying flowers and humming the same timeless song, remembering the sacrifices made for the recognition of the Bengali language in 1952.
