Two persons were killed, and five others sustained bullet wounds in a mob lynching in Chattogram's Satkania upazila on Monday night (March 3).

The incident occurred around 10:00 pm in the Chhonkhola area of Aochia union.

The deceased have been identified as Nezam Uddin and Abu Salek, while the identities of the injured remain unknown.

Chittagong District Police Superintendent (SP) Saiful Islam Santu confirmed the matter.

He said, “We have recovered the bodies of two individuals. The situation is still under investigation, and the exact cause of the incident remains unclear.”

According to police and local sources, foreign-made firearms were found in possession of the deceased. Authorities suspect the weapons may have been looted from a police station.

The injured were initially taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (Chamek) before being moved to a private hospital by their families.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Alauddin Talukder, posted at Chamek, said, “Five individuals with gunshot wounds were brought in, but their identities could not be verified before they were transferred to Parkview Hospital.”

Conflicting accounts have emerged regarding the circumstances leading to the lynching.

One version suggests that tensions flared between rival groups of an influential political party seeking dominance in the area. Gunfire was reportedly exchanged via mosque loudspeakers, and one faction allegedly declared Nezam Uddin and Abu Salek as robbers, leading to the mob attack.

The other account claims that a group of suspected robbers was confronted by locals. As they attempted to flee, they allegedly opened fire indiscriminately, injuring five people. The enraged crowd then captured two of them and beat them to death.

Authorities are investigating the incident to determine the exact sequence of events.
