Faridpur road crash death toll rises to seven

The death toll from a road accident in Faridpur district this morning (April 8) has risen to seven as two more injured succumbed to their injuries.

Earlier, five people died and at least 30 others injured after a passenger bus veered off the road and plunged into a ditch around 11:15 am near the Jobaida-Karim Jute Mill in the Joair area of Faridpur Sadar upazila.

Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station, Md Asaduzzaman, confirmed the matter.

According to him, the deceased included four men, two women, and a child. 

Six of the victims were identified as Joar Sardar, 70, and his son Iman Sardar, 25, from Nagarkanda; Bharati Sarkar, 42, from the Santoshi area; Dipa Khan, 36, from Kathia Baragram; Azibor, 46, son of Zahir Uddin from Hatibandha in Lalmonirhat; and Alam Sheikh, 46, from Hajiganj in Faridpur. 

However, the identity of the deceased child remains unknown.

According to police and eyewitnesses, the Farabi Deluxe Paribahan bus, en route to Faridpur from Bhanga, was attempting to overtake another vehicle when it lost control, hit an electric pole, and overturned into a roadside ditch. The impact caused an electric pillar to pierce the bus, trapping several passengers inside. The bus was reportedly carrying around 40 passengers, he said.

Emergency responders from the fire service and police, assisted by locals, rushed to the scene and transported the injured to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. 

Five people were declared dead on arrival, while two others succumbed to their injuries during treatment. 

Authorities said the condition of at least 10 to 12 others remains critical.

Masud Alam, Assistant Superintendent of Faridpur Highway Police, said an investigation is underway in this regard.
