Wild elephant kills 1 in Rangamati

RANGAMATI: A man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Boromath area of Vashainnadom union under Langdu upazila of the district early Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Shafiqul Islam, 55, of Boromath Mymensingh area.

Locals said that Shafiq was guarding his home on Saturday night. At that time a wild elephant appeared at the house’s yard at 4:00am and squeezed him with its trunk, leaving him injured seriously.

He was rushed to Upazila Health Complex where doctor declared him dead.

Vashainnadom Union Parishad Chairman Jahir Uddin confirmed this matter to banglanews.

Jahir Uddin said, “Some 10 to 12 wild elephants are staying in the jungle of the area. They storm into the localities at night and take position to the far jungle during day time.”

“After making several attempts, the elephants could not be relocated, most of the people are under risk of elephant attack,” he added.

Dr. Ashraf Ali, a local told banglanews that people of the village have become sick due to overnight guarding.

He sought help from the administration in this regard.
