Police stopped a protest march by workers of the 'Tottho Apa' project under the Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs as they attempted to march toward the Chief Adviser’s residence, Jamuna, on Sunday morning.
The protesters, undeterred, staged a sit-in near Kakrail Mosque after being blocked around 10:30am. They had started marching from the National Press Club, where they’ve been on a hunger strike since May 28.
Initially pressing for four demands, the workers are now focusing on two key issues:
Creation of permanent revenue-sector jobs with a unified pay grade.
Immediate disbursement of withheld salaries and allowances.
Several strikers have reportedly fallen ill and were treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
