Ex-Indian CEC Quraishi due on Mar 22

DHAKA: Dr. S.Y. Quraishi, former Chief Election Commissioner of India, will arrive in Dhaka on March 22 for a curtain raiser to the 16th General Elections in India scheduled to be held from April 7 to May 12, 2014.

During the visit, Dr. S.Y. Quraishi will attend an Open House Workshop on “India’s General Elections – 2014” arranging by the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre at 7:30pm on March 24 at he CIRDAP Auditorium in the city.  

The Workshop will be presided over by Advocate Sultana Kamal, Executive Director, Ain O Salish Kendra. Sharmeen Murshed, General Secretary of BROTEE will make the Opening Remarks.

Dr. Quraishi will take the audience on a journey through the various aspects of organizing the Indian General Elections including the role of the ‘Model Code of Conduct’.  

He will highlight how the numerous parts of a gigantic election machinery are mobilized to ensure a free, fair and peaceful election.

The talk will be followed by a Question and Answer Session.

The Workshop is designed for media persons, specialists in public affairs, policy makers, academicians, political observers and students.

The forthcoming elections in India will be the largest democratic exercise in the world with an electorate of 814 million.

As a former Chief Election Commissioner till as recently as June 2012, Dr. Quraishi has experience of how the Indian elections are held and how the office of the Election Commission has evolved to meet the challenges of the world’s largest exercise of universal suffrage.
