Home Affairs Adviser Lt. Gen. (retd) Md Jahangir Alam on Friday (June 6) assured the nation that law enforcement agencies are fully prepared to ensure security during tomorrow's Eid-ul-Azha celebrations.
He said, “There is no lack of preparation. Adequate numbers of law enforcement officers are deployed across the country. They have postponed their holidays to protect public safety during Eid.”
The adviser was inspecting security arrangements at the National Eidgah grounds around 11:30 am.
Expressing full confidence in the nationwide security measures — particularly in Dhaka — he said, “Eid prayers will take place in a peaceful environment, just like in previous years. Those attending prayers at the National Eidgah do not need to bring their mats. Let us all pray it doesn’t rain. If it does, the main congregation will shift to the National Mosque, Baitul Mukarram.”
Addressing concerns over increased incidents of theft and robbery during Eid, the adviser said 500 patrol teams will be deployed throughout the capital, including in alleyways and less-frequented areas. “We ask for the media’s cooperation. If you have any information, inform the nearest police station immediately,” he added.
On complaints that some crime victims struggle to file cases at police stations, Jahangir Alam warned, “If any officer refuses to file a case, action will be taken. We’ve already launched an online GD (General Diary) system in the Sylhet division as a pilot project. Efforts are underway to expand this nationwide, enabling both GDs and case filings online.”
Responding to a question about the recent attack on a journalist who reported on passenger harassment in Mohakhali, the advisor confirmed, “We are aware and investigating. We count on journalists to report the truth. False news creates opportunities for foreign interference. You have a good reputation — maintain that by upholding the truth.”
Commenting on repeat offenders committing crimes after release, he said, “This is a matter for the courts, not the police. But rest assured, no one will be spared — whether small fry or big fish. The law is equal for all.”
