Shameem appointed as NY consul general

DHAKA: The government has appointed Shameem Ahsan NDC as consul general in New York consulate office.

Foreign ministry sources said Ahsan is expected to join his office in the second week of April.

A career diplomat, Shameem Ahsan joined the Bangladesh Foreign Service on April 1 in 1993.

Currently he is working as Director General in external publicity wing in foreign ministry.

Earlier, he served at the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC as the Deputy Chief of Mission & Minister.

Ahsan also served in Italy (2004-2008), Kenya (1997-2002), Qatar (1996-1997) and Kuwait (1995-1997).

He also worked in various positions in the ministry in Dhaka.

Ahsan’s previous responsibilities include, Director, SAARC (2002-2004), Senior Assistant Secretary and Assistant Secretary in various Desks including UN Desk, Multilateral Economic Affairs Desk, Americas & Pacific Desk, spanning a period of 1993-1995 & 2002 at the ministry.

The newly appointed consul general attended a number of international conferences and meetings including the 12th NAM Summit held in Durban in South Africa in 1997.

He also attended various training programs on diplomacy, environment, security, immigration and language issues in USA, Italy, India, Kenya and Kuwait.

Born on September 1 in 1966 in Bangladesh, he had his honors and masters courses from Dhaka University.

He received many awards in his student life for his academic feat.

Ahsan has written two books on diplomacy and international relations.

One of his publications includes ‘Kutnitikosh’ (Encyclopedia of Diplomacy).

He has also published several articles on various issues such as climate change, environment, economic relations, regionalism, South Asia and Middle East. He continues to write on literary issues.

An ardent debater, Ahsan enjoys reciting poems, and actively participates in literary and cultural activities.

He received a President Gold Medal during his school days for the best written essay at the national level.

Ahsan is married to Guley Ferdousi Forhad and has a daughter Nahla Ahsan.
