DHAKA: Detectives detained some 1,126 people from different places of the capital while mobile courts sentenced different terms to 681 people in different drives in February and March.

The law enforcing agency seized a kilogram of heroin, 5,000 bottles of Phensidyl, 175 kilograms of cannabis, 50,000 pieces of Yaba tablets and 1,000 injections during the drives.

DMP joint commissioner (DB) Monirul Islam made the disclosure at a press conference at the DMP Media Center in the capital Saturday.

He said the DMP marked the drug as ‘mother crime’ and declared ‘zero tolerance’ against it and as part of this drive, the narcotics were recovered from the DMP area during this time.

According to DMP, some 641 were jailed in different terms in 631 cases in February and March. Of them, 153 were awarded with one year more imprisonment, 412 given 6-month and 76 were given less than 6-month imprisonment.

These seized narcotics were not produced in the capital. Yaba is being brought to Dhaka through Cox’s Bazar route, Phensedyl via Satkhira, Jessore, Jhenidah, Meherpur, Rajshahi, Naogaon and Kurigram routes and cannabis was brought to the city via Kushtia and Brahmanbaria.

In response to the query whether convicts would be released on bail, he said: “We are monitoring the matter since their detention, and I have no information so far that anyone got freed on bail.”

But, family cooperation, anti-drug awareness, coordinated operation of the Department of Narcotics Control and the police in the DMP area  would make possible to stop the drug business soon, he added.
