Law reform essential to combat road accidents : Seminar

DHAKA: Speakers at a seminar here Saturday stressed the need for reforming the laws and issuing driving licenses through proper process to make the roads safe.

The speakers also emphasized that the faulty vehicles should be checked to improve the situation.

Said Foundation, Families United Against Road Accidents and Officers’ Club jointly organized the seminar titled “Prevention of road accidents: Steps acceptable socially, nationally and legally,” at the Officers’ club here.

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed, speaking the function as the chief guest, said the government would do everything beneficial to the people. The ministry concerned should send the proposal to the Law Ministry to enact any law, he added.
 
Barrister Shafique criticized the BRTA and the division meant for road reform and called upon the members of law enforcers to ensure safe road using the existing laws.

Speaking at the discussion, State Minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Haq Tuku said anybody attempting to create obstruction in enacting new laws would be dealt with the enforcers.

Chairman of the Officers Club M Abdul Aziz presided over the discussion, which was addressed, among others, by BRTA Chairman M Ayub Rahman, Primary and Mass Education Secretary Abu Alam Mohammad Shahid Khan, Home Secretary Abdus Sobhan, Professor Shamsul Haq, and Prof. Dr. Nazrul Islam.
