32,000 police to be recruited to maintain law and order: Home Minister

JHENIDAH: Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun Saturday said the government would recruit 32,000 more personnel for the short-handed police in next three years, as “law and order could not be maintained duly for manpower shortages”.

The minister disclosed the plan while inaugurating the newly built building of Jhenidah district jail in the afternoon.

A total of 200 prisoners, including 20 women, can be accommodated in the new building built on 9.5 acres of land spending Tk 19 crore. The jail has all modern facilities, including a 25-bed hospital.

“The country’s jails are not only a punishment center for the prisoners, but those are considered as the centers for bringing the prisoners back to normal life through correction. So, necessary steps are being taken to train up the jail guards for increasing their skill and knowledge,” Sahara said.

She asked the jailors to behave soundly with the prisoners for their return to normal life.

Later, the minister attended a meeting of the district law-and-order committee held in the DC’s conference room and expressed satisfaction over the development of law-and-order situation of the district.

High officials of the district and police administrations, upazila chairmen and local AL leaders were also present.
