EC to compensate to 316 victims

DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC) will compensate a total of Tk 1 crore to some 316 people those became victims of violence during the 10th parliamentary elections.

Of the victims, some 187 are the members of different law enforcing agencies and 129 others are different poling officers.

The recompense, which will be reached to the victims’ hand within this week, will be provided in four categories—A, B, C, and D.

Some Tk 5 lakh will be given for family of a deceased each, Tk 2 lakh for the people who have one more mutilations, and Tk 1 lakh who have one mutilation.

Tk 10,000 will be provided to the victims who sustained minor injuries, Tk 20,000 to the people who stayed at hospital for 3 to 7 days, Tk 30,000 to those who took treatment at hospital for 7 to 15 days, and Tk 50,000 will be given to the people who were undergoing treatment at hospital for 15 more days.

EC sources quoted an official said a government order (GO) would be issued in this regard this week, and the money would be handed over to the victim via the heads of the concerned authorities.

Money of the victim policemen will be handed over to the Inspector General of Police while the money of the polling officers will be given to concerned returning officers, the sources added.

About 300 polling officers and lawmen were injured in the nationwide violence before and after the election, which was held amid the boycott of the then opposition BNP-led 19-party alliance.

Nation had witnessed a serial violence for nearly a year before and after the polls. 4 polling officer, and 2 members of army, one each of Ansar, and Police were killed in the violence.

According to the EC sources, two polling officers and a law enforcing agency member were killed and about 275 polling officers were injured on the voting day on January 5.

The commission formed a fund of Tk 1 crore to help the victims a month after the polls held and the compensation is providing from the fund after verifying the victims’ details.
