Extremist killed in Jessore

JESSORE: A suspected extremist was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Abhaynagar upazila of the district early Wednesday. Five policemen also sustained injuries during the gunbattle.

The deceased was identified as Saiful Shikari, 32, son of Mohon Shikari of Shakarpasha village of the upazila.

Abhaynagar Thana Officer-in-Charge Khabir Ahmed told banglanews, on secret information, police nabbed Saiful from the village on Tuesday; later based on the information given by the detainee, police conducted operations in Shashamanghat area of the village to recover arms during dawn of the day.”

Sensing the presence of police, the extremists began firing targeting lawmen; police retaliated with gunshots in self-defense, leaving Saiful killed on the spot, Khabir added.

Police fired 22 rounds of bullets while the extremist cadres also hurled 20/22 rounds of bullets.

Saiful, an accused of some eight cases including killing and robbery, was killed in his associates’ firing, police claimed.

Police, however, recovered one pipe gun, two rounds of bullets from the spot.

The body was sent to Jessore Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
