DHAKA: Transparency International Bangladesh (TIP)’s report on private universities on selling certificates is impossible and unrealistic, commented education minister Nurul Islam Nahid.

The minister assured that if anybody takes money illegally, action will be taken against them.

He claimed that TIB did not talk to the education ministry in preparing the report.

Expressing his wonder, the minister said that TIB had been working on this issue for two years but they did not discuss with the ministry.

‘They should inform us, discuss with us, but they did not do this. They found money transaction everywhere. It is impossible and unrealistic,’ Nahid added.

He said that there was no law regarding private universities. Their government, in previous tenure, formulated new law in this regard for the first time in 2010.

There were 56 universities. After the enactment of the law many universities went to their own campus, he added.

However, the minister agreed that a few of universities are really doing business and selling certificates.

‘A list of 15 universities has been made in this connection. We are taking action against them. They are now in court. After that we will take action, he said.

The minister further said that University Grant Commission (UGC) has formed a committee on TIB report.
