Govt bans Partex Group’s 5 baby foods

DHAKA: The government has cancelled the approval of five baby foods produced and marketed by Partex Group. The foods have been banned as those were hazardous for child health.

Health directorate sources confirmed on Monday the matter to banglanews.

The banned items are five types of baby foods including food supplements for the infants aged between 0 days to six months, baby foods for seven to 24-months-old children and some of other milk powder with Semolina (widely known as Suji).

However, seeking anonymity, sources added that the earlier license which was belonged to Partex group had expired this year.

The group recently applied to Dr Shahnewaz, the director of Institute of Public Health Nutrition (IPHN), to renew the license, but, he refused to accept their plea for the absence of nutrition standards in the foods items and hazardous to child health.

It is said that alternative foods or food supplements can not be the principal sources of children’s nutrition and nothing can alternative of breast feeding.
