DHAKA: The law ministry is going to place the draft of constitutional amendment bill to restore parliament's authority to impeach Supreme Court judges by abolishing the existing Supreme Judicial Council.

Through this, the government is on way to change Article 96 of the constitution to restore the parliament's power to impeach judges.

Law Minister Anisul Haque on Friday told banglanews that no judicial council will remain in proposed draft of Article 96 of the constitution.

After the approval in the cabinet, the bill will be sent to the national parliament to place before JS session.

A reliable source of the ministry said that a commission would be formed with the members of Parliamentary Standing Committee and judiciary.

The government decided to bring amendment to the constitution for empowering the parliament to impeach the SC judges.

According to the article 96, the Supreme Judicial Council, led by the chief justice, inquires into the capacity or conduct of a judge and recommends to the president, and then the president can order for the judge's removal.

Former Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed told banglanews such type of law is remained in India and other countries.
