70,000 families marooned in Bogra

BOGRA: Floods have left around 70,000 families marooned submerging over 176 villages and thousands hecters of cultivable land in three upazilas of the district recently.

District administration tried to distribute relief to the flood affected people of the area but failed due to poor communication system.

Upazila Project Implementation Office (PIO) sources confirmed the matter to banglanews on Saturday.

Sariakandi upazila PIO ATM Benjir Rahman said that 110 out of 135 villages were completely went under water. Some 45 thousands of families were affected in this calamity.

However, 95-mt rice and taka 125,000 were allocated for the affected people, he added.

Dhunat upazila PIO Riazul Islam said that 30 out of 197 villages were completely went under water while 10 of them submerged partially. Some 15 thousand families have been affected in this inundation.

A total of 35-mt rice and taka 75,000 were allocated for the affected people, he added.

Sonatala upazila PIO Altaf Hossain said that 10 out of 125 villages were completely went under water while 16 of them submerged partially. Some eight thousand and five hundred families have been affected in flood.

A total of 15-mt rice and taka 25,000 were allocated for the flood affected people, he added.

On duty officials said that the relief including dry foods, candles and matches are being provided among the affected people.

Bogra Water Development Board executive engineer Nurul Islam Sarkar said that the flood situation did not improve in those areas.

Earlier on Thursday night, a 600-meter flood control dam in Rouhadah was destroyed leaving a vast area of Sariakandi upazila flooded. Then the flood water quickly rushed to Dhunat and Sonatala upazilas.
