DHAKA: Convicted war criminal former Jamaat-e-Islami chief Ghulam Azam was admitted at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in critical condition on Tuesday morning.
He has been kept at the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of the hospital.
Azam was taken to CCU at 8:30am following the increase of his blood pressure.
Farman Ali, senior jail super of Dhaka Central Jail, told banglanews, “Ghulam Azam was admitted at the CCU of BSMMU at 8:30am as his blood pressure had increased”.
Azam is being treated under the supervision of Cardiology Department chairman Dr Abu Siddique and Dr Mestak Ahmed.
Dr Abu Siddique told banglanews that Ghulam Azam was taken to CCU as his respiratory problem had increased.
“His condition is critical now,” he added.
Ghulam Azam’s son Abdullahil Aman Azmi told banglanews, “The hospital authorities informed us around 10:00am that our father was taken to CCU”.
Earlier on July 15, International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) sentenced Ghulam Azam 90-year imprisonment for his involvement in war crimes in 1971.
The 91-year-old Ghulam Azam was found guilty by the war crimes tribunal of all five charges of conspiracy, incitement, planning, abetment and failure to prevent murder.
