CHITTAGONG: A Chittagong court on Wednesday awarded life-term imprisonment to five people, including four bank officers, over the embezzlement of Tk 4.5 crore from Agrani Bank Limited.
The convicts are bank officers Abdus Shukkur, Nirmal Mallik, accountant Main Uddin Chowdhury, laser keeper Tarit Kanti Sen and account holder Swapan Kumar Ghose.
The court also gave bank officer Jayadi Prakash Barua for 10 years imprisonment.
Justice Ataur Rahman of Chittagong Divisional Special Judge Court passed the order in presence of Jayati Prakash Barua.
Later, Jayati had been transferred to jail.
According to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) act section 409, the court placed the convicts’ life term imprisonment.
Public Prosecutor (PP) of the court Mezbah Uddin Chowdhury said the convicts embezzled around Tk 4.5 crore from December 23, 1985 to July 8, 1986 from the bank’s Khatunganj branch.
Then ACC inspector Abu M Arif Shiddique filed a case against nine people with Kotwali Thana on June 8, 1988.
Later, ACC Inspector Nurul Haq submitted charge-sheet against six people on December 28, 1998 and the court framed charge on June 25, 2002.
