6 more unsolicited power plants okayed<br> 519mw electricity to be added by Feb

Dhaka: Anther quantum of 519-megawatt electricity will be added to the national power grid by next February as the government Monday approved deals with another six private companies under a crash course.

The cabinet committee on public purchase gave the nod to the unsolicited project proposals at a meeting at the cabinet conference hall in the secretariat with finance minister Abdul Muhith in the chair.

Under the deals, IEL Consortium and Associates will produce 100 megawatts, Summit Power 102mws, Khulna Power Company Ltd 115mws, Sinha Power company Ltd 102mws, Dutch-Bangla Power Company Ltd 50mws and Banglatech 50mws.

Earlier, the government had approved two other private power-production deals without floating tender in order to meet the exigencies of huge power shortages in the country.  

Following the new deals a total of 4519mw electricity will flow in the national grid by February 2010, officials said.

At present the country has a generation capacity of maximum 4,000 megawatts of power against a known demand for 6,000MW.
