A female garment worker was killed in a road accident at Chairman Bari U-turn in Banani, triggering protests as fellow workers today (March 10) blocked key roads and the elevated expressway, causing severe traffic congestion in the area of the capital.
The deceased, identified as Minara Akhter, was killed while crossing the road early Monday morning.
Another worker, Sumaiya Akhter, sustained injuries and has been admitted to Kurmitola General Hospital. Authorities have yet to confirm which vehicle was involved in the accident.
In response, garment workers blocked both inbound and outbound roads, bringing traffic to a standstill in Banani, Mohakhali, and Gulshan. Commuters, including office-goers, faced significant delays.
Traffic diversions were put in place, with vehicles redirected from Banani-Kakoli crossing and Mohakhali’s Amtoli towards Gulshan 1 and 2. Outbound traffic was also rerouted to Amtoli.
Police, led by Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge Russell Sarkar, are attempting to restore order.
"The workers have been blocking the road since the accident. Efforts are underway to ease the situation," Sarkar said.
