‘South Asian countries need regional cooperation’

DHAKA: Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has said regional coordination is essential to achieve the goals set by South Asian countries, including Bangladesh.

She came up with the observation while addressing a seminar titled ‘Vision -2014, Regional Cooperation’ organized by Delhi Policy Group in India’s capital Delhi on Friday.

The parliament secretariat issued a press release in this regard on Saturday noon.

Dr Shirin Sharmin said, “Neighboring country India is our friend and Bangladesh will always remember the contribution of India in Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.”

Bangladesh has cooperative relation with India in trade, investment, economic cooperation that assures mutual development and progress.

The speaker emphasized highest utilization of water through distribution of 54 linked rivers’ water between Bangladesh and India.
 
She also said all countries of this region should work sincerely to increase power and hydroelectric power production, water management, prevent terrorism, regional cooperation with people.

Dr Sharmin also said Bangladesh is committed to combat terrorism for regional security. 

SAARC could play an important role in ensuring regional coordination, the speaker added.

Minister of Commerce and Supplies Sunil Bahadur Thapa, former Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama also delivered speech in the seminar chaired by ex-secretary general of SAARC Sheel Kant Sharma.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Tarik Ahmed Karim was also present there.
