33 killed in Natore road crash

NATORE: At least 33 people were killed and 40 others injured as two passenger buses collided head-on on Banpara-Hatikumrul road at Baraigram upazila in the district on Monday afternoon.

Of the deceased, some 29 were identified as Gurudaspur upazila civil engineer Hafizur Rahman, 50, and his subordinate Rezaul Karim, 38, Natore judge court advocate Motaleb Hossain, 55, Baraigram upazila’s Jonail Degree College lecturer Jamal Hossain, 40, his daughter Jannati, 5, Alal Uddin, 40, resident of Bajitpur village of the upazila, Sidhuli village’s Ebad Ali, 45, Sharif Uddin, 30, Labu, 35, Alal, 55, Sohrab Hossain, 40, Aynal Haque, 35, Rabbel Ali, 45, Atahar Ali, 50, Babul, 40, Awal, 30, Teltupi village’s Mohona, 5, Kahir, 35, Tofajjal, 45, Kismat, 45, Abdul Kuddus, 66,  Rahman, 55, Rahmat 55, Shoilen, 50, Abul Khayer, 65, Hanif, 40, Jaker Ali, 38, Azadul Bari, 35, of Baraigarm  and driver of the Athoi Paribahan bus Alam Hossain.

Banglanews Natore correspondent said a Rajshahi-bound passenger bus of Keya Paribahan collided head-on with a Gurudaspur-bound Athoi Paribanhan in the area around 3:30pm, leaving 20 people dead on the spot and 55 others injured critically.

Later, 15 more died in hospitals, he added.

Officer-in-Charge of Banpara Highway Police Station Fuad Lohani confirmed the accident to banglanews.

The fatally injured were rushed to different hospitals and clinics, he added.

Meanwhile, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader is going to visit the spot in the night.

Sources said he has already left the capital for Natore in the evening.
