Bangladesh to return West Bengal fishermen

DHAKA: Chief Minister of West Bengal in India Mamata Banerjee on Monday said the West Bengal fishermen, who were detained by the Bangladesh authorities, from the Sunderbans region for entering its territory would return home soon.

She made the disclosure to reporters during her trip to Sunderbans, reports The Hindu.

Mamata Banerjee also said that she had written to the Union Government of India to ensure speedy release of the fishermen by taking up the matter with the Bangladesh government.

“The fishermen were unaware of some recent changes in the boundary,” she added.

The Deputy High Commission of Bangladesh in Kolkata, however, said they have no official information in this regard.

Meanwhile, the Indian Coast Guard has detained two Bangladeshi trawlers with five men onboard for illegally entering Indian waters, a senior police official said.

“They were produced in court after being arrested. The court has remanded them to judicial custody,” Superintendent of Police, South 24 Parganas Praveen Tripathi told The Hindu.
