DHAKA: Police charged baton and used water cannon when several hundred BSc Dental students tried to besiege Health Ministry in the city Wednesday.

The law enforcers also picked up 15 students from the spot.

The students under the banner of BSc Dental Association began demonstration in front of the city’s National Press Club at 11:00 followed by a bid to besiege to Ministry, which police foiled.

Razia, a 2nd year Dental student, told banglanews, as part of their besiege program, they marched towards the ministry to submit a memorandum of understanding to health minister, completing their scheduled program in front of the Club.

Later, Police charged baton and used water canon when the student tried to advance by breaking barricades in front of the Secretariat’s gate, she added.

Razia went on saying that police picked up a total of 15 students including association convener Sarwar Hossain Bhuiyan and member secretary Dipangkar Ray.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Ramna Zone) assistant commissioner Shiblee Noman confirmed the detention to banglanews.

Shiblee said, police asked the students to give a list of them who wanted to go to the Secretariat.

But the protesters rather try to create disorder situations and police picked up 15 of them, he added.

The students have been demonstrating to press for their four-point demands that include job opportunity, registration for practice and admission process under existing curriculum for several days.
