DHAKA: Two persons --a suspected mugger and a criminal---were killed in separate ‘gunfights’ with law enforcers in Pabna and Comilla districts early Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Jahangir Hossain, 27, son of Momtaj Malitha of Pabna and Azad Khan, 23, aide of listed criminal Jira Sumon of Comilla.
Banglanews Pabna correspondent reports: A gang of muggers are snatching valuables from passengers of different vehicles at gunpoint in Gokul Nagar Razu Cinema Hall area on Iswardi-Rajshahi highway at 2:00am, said Iswardi thana officer-in-charge Biman Kumar Das.
Being informed from locals, police rushed to the spot. Sensing the presence of police, the muggers opened fire on them. In retaliation, police also fired back that triggered a gunfight.
At one stage of firing, Jahangir was caught line in the fire.
He was taken to Upazila health complex and later, he succumbed to his injures on the way to Pabna General Hospital.
The OC also said Jahangir was listed mugger and accused in several mugging cases filed with Iswardi thana.
His body was sent to Pabna General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Banglanews correspondent from Comilla reports: Acting on tip off that a gang of criminals were planning to commit subversive acts near Palpara bridge under sadar upazila. Sensing law enforcer’s presence, criminals opened fire on them. Police also retaliated that triggered a gunfight at 2:30am.
Azad was caught line in the fire while his cohorts managed to escape.
Later, injured Azad died on way to Comilla Medical College Hospital.
Officer In-Charge Monirul Islam of Detective Branch of Police confirmed the matter to banglanews.
